ABOUT RUTH HARRIS

Hi, I'm Ruth Harris

MY BACKGROUND

I retired to Pisgah Forest in 2009 with my husband, Mike, and my son, Matthew. Mike, also a retired engineer, enjoys fixing up old cars and motorcycles. Matthew attended Brevard Middle and High Schools and subsequently graduated from Clemson (Go Tigers!). He currently lives in Greenville, SC and is enjoying his job as an Industrial Engineer with Lockheed.

I have a unique set of skills having been a school psychologist, an educational researcher, an aerospace engineering manager, and the mom of two special needs children. I bring those skills to bear at a time when the future of work is about to experience a dramatic shift due to the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I am excited to serve on the Transylvania County School Board and to help prepare TC students for this tumultuous but exciting future workplace.

MY PLATFORM

As a member of the Transylvania County School Board, I will focus on ensuring that every student, whether they are college bound or attending a career and technical training program, will be prepared to enter the highly competitive workplace of the future.

I will work to ensure that all available resources are accessed including increased volunteer recruitment and a more agressive grant acquisition process. I will promote policies that empower parents, teachers, and students to be more engaged in identifying and solving barriers to better education. Together, we can build a brighter future for our children and our community.

MY VISION

Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.

At the heart of our educational journey lies a commitment to each student's unique path, whether destined for college pursuits or embarking on career/technical training programs. I envision a future where our students not only reach their full potential but emerge resilient and ready to navigate the considerable uncertainties posed by the introduction of AI tools and systems in the future workforce.

In this vision, families and educators collaborate in a partnership founded on mutual respect and open communication. Our community fosters an environment where students thrive on overcoming challenges, equipped with the critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills essential for real-world success. Let us establish systems that attract and retain exceptional teachers, creating a culture where educators are incentivized to join and stay in Transylvania County.

I seek a school district that builds on the exciting work already being done by so many dedicated teachers and administrators, where throughout the county, students are not just attendees but eager participants in their education, finding joy and engagement in the learning process. Together, let's build a future where the flame of curiosity is kindled, and our students emerge as adaptable, resilient individuals prepared for the dynamic landscape of tomorrow. Join me in creating an inspiring, yet grounded, educational experience for the students of Transylvania County.
